Kaziranga National Park is located amidst the Nagaon and Golaghat district of Assam occupying the area of Kaliabor and Bokakhat subdivisions. It is one of the most famous national park amidst the wildlife enthusiasts. As per geographical location, this famous national park lies in between 26 degree 30 N to 26 degree 45N and longitudely it occupies 93 degree 08 E to 93 degree 36E. this popular national park occupies a total area of about 429 sq. Kms of Nagaon and Golaghat district in the state of Assam. From east to west, this national park s almost 40 kms long and from north to south it is almost 13 kms broad. The entire area pf the Kaziranga National Park is confined with the Mora Diphlu and the Brahmaputra River. Mora Diphlu forms the southern boundary of the Kaziranga National Park and the Brahma Putra rivers forms the eastern and the Southern boundaries.

From the park area and through the tea estate, the national Highway 37 passes and thus many people get the opportunity to spot Rhinos there.

This national park accommodates one horned Rhinoceros in large number and thus it is famous to have the largest population of one horned Rhinos and water buffaloes. Apart from these two famous animals, Kaziranga National Park is a home to other famous animals like Swamp deer, Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephants. All these animals in Kaziranga National Park forms a big Five and for this it is famous amidst the wild life enthusiasts.

Apart from these Big Five animals, Kaziranga National Park offers shelter to 30+ species of mammals. Out of these 30 species of mammals, 15 mammalian species comes under the threatened category. This national park is also famous to have a good population of avifauna.

Flora in Kaziranga

Flora of Kaziranga is also very much popular amidst the wild life enthusiasts and the nature enthusiasts. Basically there are three major types of constituent of Flora in Kaziranga National Park. They are - Alluvial inundated grasslands which basically comprises of short grasses and tall thickets of elephant grass, tropical semi-evergreen forests and tropical wet evergreen forests. But the Kaziranga National Park is mainly famous for having tall and dense elephant grasses which are beautifully intermixed by the small swamplands. This is the most important part of the flora of Kaziranga National Park.

Due to flood-plain ecosystem, the land is quite level in the Kaziranga National Park. The land is mainly covered by dense and tall elephant grass. Within the Park area, you will also spot some pockets of tropical semi evergreen and deciduous forests. The beauty of the grasslands get enhanced by the presence of the scattered trees of Silk cotton ( Bombax ceiba), Elephant Apple (Dillenia indica) and Indian Rosewood ( Dalbergia sissoo) . These trees offers a typical savannah look akin to the sprawling wilderness of North America and Africa. These picturesque look of swamplands have an abundance coverage of water lilies, lotus and water hyacinth. The large clumps of semi evergreen forests breaks the monotony of the swamps and the grasslands.

  • The nearest railway station is Furkating Junction which is hardly at a two hour drive from Kaziranga National Park.

  • If you are interested to travel Kaziranga National Park by road then go to Guwahati or Jorhat (240 kms) and from there take a cab or bus to reach Kaziranga National Park.

Safari Tips In Kaziranga National Park

  • The Kaziranga National Park offers Elephant Safari ride for public from 5:30 AM and Jeep Safari ride from 7:30 AM in the morning till 4:00 PM in the evening.
  • Tourists can hire forest guards from Baghori and Agaratoli. There is not any fixed charges for these forest guards. Tourists can tip the forest guard in between Rs 50-200.
  • Tourists have to reach the safari gate half an hour before the scheduled safari time.
  • If you have booked the elephant safari ride, then you have to follow all the instructions of the mahout.
  • Foreign tourists must carry some reasonable amount of Indian currency apart from foreign currency.
  • Tourists must carry camera and Binoculars in order to enhance wildlife and bird watching experience.
  • Foreign tourists should complete all the required formalities by contacting the tourist office.

Best Time To Visit Kaziranga National Park.

Best Time to visit Kaziranga National Park is in between the months of November and April. For safety reasons, this national park closes earlier for monsoon which is a different feature from other national parks. Therefore the most suitable period to visit Kaziranga is from November till April.
